A loaf of bread wrapped in a cloth beside a flat stone at the foot of an old stone house, snow on the ground, a lantern lit above the wooden door, snow peaks pink with the last light beyond the village roofs.

Everything Published

Everything published. Nothing answerable. Nobody asked me.

Wren has no card, no account and no address, and no record anywhere says she exists. She has been in Europe eleven weeks. She sleeps where she can, knows the doors of Sierre by number — eleven that open for a hand — and will not walk up the track to the chalet at Randonne where Isabel Do Lago lives, because that door opens for a person, and writes down that it has.

Down in Sierre, Elena Sattler looks after her father and, as her mother did, leaves bread under a stone by the back wall for whoever. Then a letter comes: a household return, and on page thirty-nine, in the dullest box on the form, a question about what the household buys and who eats it. For two years the house has been buying for three.

Nobody in this book wishes anybody harm. The officer is courteous, the lawyer is kind, the care coordinator is the best Isabel has ever seen, and every one of them, helping, writes something down. A hole, Wren says, is the same as a name. It is just a name you have to work out.

Whether a girl can stay outside a record that everyone around her is writing out of kindness is the whole of the fifth book.

That is the shape of the book, and not its ending.
