Life Goes On
You are not written down by your enemies.
The last of the five is the one readers resist, and I would rather they resisted it here than put the book down.
The fifth novel takes the obvious escape and closes it. If a system describes everyone, then simply stay out of it: no card, no account, no device, no address. The novel follows a person who does exactly that, and it is scrupulous about the cost.
What it finds is that refusal is not an absence. Refusal is a status, and a status gets recorded. Declining to answer is itself an entry. The book's phrase for it is that a hole is only a name you have to work out, and the arithmetic in it is quiet and awful: an unexplained quantity in a household, a gap in a list, a night with no address attached. None of that is an accusation. It is a shape, and shapes get filled in.
The second thing it finds is worse, and it is the reason the book exists.
In the fifth novel nobody does anything to anybody. Every entry made about that person is made by somebody who likes her. A clerk being quick to help. A lawyer tidying an untidy file. A driver obliged to log a passenger. A neighbour who cannot bear that a girl is hungry. Kindness in that world is administrative, and there is no way to accept it that does not leave a mark.
Which is the last thing I would put to a reader.
You are not written down by your enemies. You are written down by the app that lets a friend share a photograph, by the colleague who adds you to a group, by the family member who uploads the family tree, by the shop that remembers so it can serve you faster, by every institution that has ever been genuinely trying to help. None of it required your consent and all of it was well meant.
So there is no outside, and there never was, and the novels do not pretend otherwise. Somewhere near the end of the fifth book, a person who has been described accurately by everyone who was ever kind to her says the only thing left to say about it, and says it to a machine on a post that is not a thing that answers.
Nobody asked me.
Then the last page comes, and it does not close. It can be read as defeat or as defiance or as nothing at all, and the book declines to say which.
The characters do not get an ending. Neither do you. The only difference between you and them is that you know how far along it is and they do not.
