Correction appends
Nothing in these books is a lie. That is the difficulty.
There is a phrase that runs through all five books and settles at the end of the last one. Readers write to me about it more than anything else, usually to ask whether it is a threat.
It is not a threat. It is a description of how records work, and it is the mildest sentence in the sequence.
Correction appends.
It means that nothing is removed. It means that when a record is wrong and you have it put right, the right version is added and the wrong version stays, because that is what integrity requires of any serious archive. It means that being described is permanent, and that a description outlives the reason it was written.
The novels build their whole idea of power on this, and they do it without a villain. In the books the system is never wrong about anybody. That is not a lapse. It is the point. Everything published about a person is accurate, arrived at by a fair process, and open to correction — and there is still no appeal, because you cannot appeal against an accurate description of yourself.
The fifth book turns it over slowly through a woman who has spent seven years and four months proving that everything ever said about her brother was correct, and who is proud that not one word of hers has ever been struck out.
The everyday version needs no fiction at all. A credit file. An old newspaper piece that surfaces before your name. A form you filled in at twenty-two. A figure guessed once, on a busy morning, that has been copied forward ever since by people who had no idea it was a guess. An insurance quote that moved after a device on your wrist reported honestly.
None of that is defamation. All of it is true. Try having it removed.
So when a reader asks why the books offer no answers, this is the closest I can get to one. The books are full of answers. Every question in them is answered, in writing, correctly, and usually by the machine. What is missing is not an answer.
There is no remedy. That is a different absence, and it is the one you are feeling.
