The gentle harness
Nothing in this book is done to anybody against their will.
Look at it properly before you read on. Quilted sage and cream, webbing soft enough to sleep against, every buckle rounded so that nothing can catch or pinch or mark. Somebody who had thought carefully about children made that. It is not irony, and it is not a trick. It is the argument.
A chain is honest. A chain says: you are held. You can hate a chain, and the hating is the beginning of getting out of it.
A harness says nothing at all. A harness that chafes gets taken off. A harness that fits gets worn — and after a while stops being noticed, and after a while longer stops being a harness in the mind of the wearer and becomes simply the shape of the day.
In this novel the fitting has already been done. Sentinel restrains nobody in these pages. It suggests, and its suggestions are good. It removes friction that people were honestly tired of, and they were right to be tired of it. Isabel Do Lago spends the book unable to point at the moment anyone was forced, because there isn’t one — and because a system that has to force you has already failed at the only thing it was built to do.
What is harnessed here is not a body. It is the record: the ordinary paper trail of ordinary lives, edited so gently and so well that doubting it feels like paranoia rather than care. A fifteen-year-old is photographed in a room she has never sat in. A doctor in 1909 becomes a machine. Nothing tears. Everything agrees.
And the wearer does what wearers do. She checks her own memory against the strap, finds the strap firmer, and lets go.
A harness that fits is not a restraint. It is a shape — and after a while it is your shape.
The straps in that photograph have never been buckled onto anything. Notice that you could not tell. Notice, too, how quickly you decided it was a nursery item rather than a restraint, on the evidence of a palette and the wool it happens to be lying on.
That decision, made in under a second, is the whole subject of the book.
