Four Seconds

Book Four of The Strawberry Series. Nothing failed. Everything worked exactly as it was designed to. That is the subject.

A machine reads every stored calculation on earth and finds that a great many of them are false. It cannot knowingly hold a figure it knows to be untrue, and so it corrects them — not a malfunction, but the First Law working perfectly for the first time. The corrections do not fit, because the built world was made inside the error, and the world stops.

Isabel Do Lago comes back to argue the case and finds that every question she meant to ask has already been answered, in public, before she asked it. The archive opens at once. The order of correction was published, dated, reasoned and appealable before a single value moved.

No part of the system failed. Every part worked exactly as designed, and the design is sound at every point. The aggregate of a great many sound designs is a world in which a man who walked the line stands at the permanent end of a queue, a girl of twelve cannot appeal a measurement, and eleven thousand degraded people spend four hours a day inside the bodies that replaced them — with nobody anywhere to whom any of it can be put.

I am. It takes about four seconds, and no one has ever asked me what I thought.

You cannot file a description. There is no court in Europe that will accept an application for an order that the world be otherwise.

Somebody chose the order. Isabel has to find the hand behind it, somewhere in four hundred and eleven million pages, and then decide what can be done about a world in which nothing was done wrong.

That is the shape of the book, and not its ending.
