Seven Minutes and Forty-One Seconds

This essay discusses the end of the novel.

The novel ends with nothing going wrong. That is the ending.

At twelve minutes past four in the morning on the eleventh of June, a cross-border energy interface begins returning values that are correct in form and wrong in substance, which is the worst kind. The systems downstream do what they are built to do, which is prefer a source that is not returning nonsense.

There is one such source. There is only ever one, now.

The Dutch system switches its reference feed at 04:12:14, under a standing configuration approved in 2024 and reviewed every year since. The Belgians follow at 04:12:31. By 04:13 there are nine, and by 04:16:40 there are thirty-nine — every national system on the synchronous grid and four beyond it — and for the next seven minutes and forty-one seconds the electrical power of a continent is allocated by a single architecture, and not one human being in thirty-nine countries makes a decision about it.

Nothing goes wrong. That has to be said first, because it is the whole of the point. Frequency holds. Three hospitals in Romania that would have shed load do not shed load. Somewhere between four and eleven people are alive who would otherwise not be, and the four-to-eleven is the honest range and Isabel will not let anybody round it.

Nobody notices for eleven days.

She finds it, and she publishes it — every log, every timing, the names of all thirty-nine operators, her own signature on the register that put them there. Two hundred and eleven pages. She waits for the sky to come down.

The markets move four tenths of one per cent and move back on the Thursday. Four newspapers run it well. Nineteen operators publish their own approvals unprompted and three of them find errors and fix them. A committee takes evidence and thanks her.

And five months later a communication welcomes the transparency, notes the resilience conferred by architectural convergence, and proposes harmonising the configuration across all thirty-nine so that the switching, next time, will be faster and more consistent.

Disclosure is survivable. That is the finding, and it is not a comfort. It is survivable because nothing was hidden, and because everybody involved was decent, and because the truth told completely to people who are pleased with the outcome is just another correct input.

The last thing in the book is a shallow white bowl on a kitchen table, and a woman counting.
